Epic Spell Wars of the Battle Wizards Review

Everyone in our family likes this game, and everyone we've played it with has enjoyed it. The mechanism is simple but fun: players take turns combining up to three cards (source, quality, delivery) to cast spells that damage their opponents, heal their own damage, etc. The last wizard standing wins the round. Magic items add fun to the game: some are ridiculously powerful, but cackling is short-lived because they change hands frequently and revenge is sweet.

The spell names and illustrations are hilarious, and together with unpredictable spell effects (many target victims randomly or backfire on their casters) and the inherently vicious nature of the game (the object is to blow your opponents into goo, after all) make it hard to stop laughing.

Players used to games with more depth (Dominion, Thunderstone, etc.) will find Epic Spell Wars simplistic and lighthearted by comparison. Setup, learning and play are quick, the game takes up little table space, and it comes in a small box, which makes it an ideal game to throw in the backpack in case there's an opportunity.
