I like this set, I don't know why it is not more available, it seems that less and less vendors still carry it.

I guess some may consider it old fashioned b/c it doesn't yet have the "spare queen sales gimmick" that so many of the newer sets use today. Besides these rooks are sturdy and work well as a queen when turned upside down but, I suppose that idea went out of fashion with analog clocks. Also it has a felt paper base, though it is a high quality felt paper, much better than the stuff on the cheap "club special" sets. In fact it is the same kind of felt paper used on the fancy high dollar Studio Anne Carlton sets. But if you are un satisfied with the paper felt, enough real felt to re-felt the bottoms cost less than 50� at most fabric stores. With fabric felt, a pair of scissors, and rubber cement and your in business with real felt, So not a big deal.

The rooks are very nice, wide and well weighted not skinny little towers like other sets have.

The knights are just awesome, big and heavy and make a great sounding thud when dropped on c7 (or c2) forking the uncastled king and rook! I love the knights one of the best features of the set, However, they do look diferent than the ones in the stock picture above. The actual knights are molded with an open mouth.

I have had mine for about 5 years & the cross broke off the black king when it was dropped about 3 feet on to a hard tile floor. But it was easily & unnoticably repaierd with supper glue. The same thing also happened to both kings on my Ultimate Tripple Weighted set.

The online places that still have this set usually sell it for about 40 bucks. I was able to get for much less on a clearence sale. It should probably be priced less, but it is made in the USA, if that is important to you then the extra cost may be with worth it.

This is my favorite set. It used to be the standard weighted set at clubs and tournamets. But Drueke(Carom), would be well served by updating the set with a few more modern features such as, spare queens, fabic felt, and more competitve pricing (but not at the cost of out-sourcing the manufacture of the set to other coutries).

EDIT: 4/26/12 -- the current sale price of 30.56 w/ free Super Saver Shipping makes the set well worth it. Buy it at this price! It was $40.00 when I first wrote the above review. It also earned it the 5th star but if the price goes back to 40 then I'll rate it only 4 stars again.

ALSO, I THINK THE KNIGHTS ARE THE BEST PIECE IN THE SET! :-)
